Hawks, Pats fall in semis

Posted

The Bishop Hendricken boys’ soccer team fell in dramatic fashion last Wednesday in the Division I semifinals, as Portsmouth’s Kenneth Armijo buried the game’s lone goal 31 seconds into overtime to propel the Patriots into the state final with a 1-0 win.

The Hawks had their chances in regulation, but just couldn’t capitalize.

In the first half, Chukwuma Onyejose took a cross from Ewan Noble and sent it just over the bar, before heading a throw-in sent into the box just wide a few minutes later.

In the second half, Noble had arguably the Hawks’ best chance, volleying the ball over the head of a defender and ripping a shot that was grabbed by Portsmouth keeper William Swart, who leaped to deny the Hendricken sophomore midfielder.

After Armijo’s tally, Hendricken pressed for the equalizer, particularly in the second 10-minute overtime.

With just under two minutes remaining in the second overtime, it looked as though Hendricken would force a shootout when Onyejose elevated for a header in the box, but the redirection hit directly off the crossbar and stayed out.

Portsmouth went on to fall to Barrington, 2-1, in the state final at Rhode Island College on Saturday.

Pilgrim shut out by Davies in semis

Top-seeded Davies proved to be too much for No. 5 Pilgrim last Wednesday in the Division III semifinals, as Jose Orozco netted all three goals in a 3-0 victory at Cumberland High School.

Orozco, who was second in the state in scoring during the regular season, scored one goal in the first half and buried two goals in the second half to put the game out of reach for the Pats.

Max Caracuzzo was great in net despite enduring the loss, stopping 12 of the 15 shots sent his way.

Davies battled past Burrillville in overtime to secure the D-III state crown on Saturday.
