Rising Bishop Hendricken senior Garrett Quillen made a run, but saw his hopes of a Junior Amateur Championship come to a close on Wednesday morning.
Playing in the 92nd Rhode Island Junior Amateur Championship at Agawam Hunt, Quillen lost in the quarterfinals of the main draw 4-and-3 to No. 2 seed Patrick Welch. Welch advanced to the semifinals to take on Matt Corio, while Jake Bauer and Will Hall were playing in the other semifinal. Bauer defeated Hall 3-and-2 on Wednesday afternoon, while Welch beat Corio 2-and-1. The finals were scheduled for today.
Quillen fired a 5-over 75 in Monday’s qualifying round, earning him the No. 7 overall seed. Then on Tuesday, in the Round of 16, he defeated Drew Aitken 4-and-2 to advance to the quarters.
Two other Hendricken players – Duncan Marshall and Justin Matrone – also competed. Because they both finished outside of the top 16 on qualifying day, they were moved into the First Division, which seeds the No. 17-32 finishers in qualifying and has them play in a separate draw.
Marshall was the No. 2 seed in that draw after shooting a 9-over 79 in qualifying, which put him in 18th overall. However, he lost in the Round of 16 to No. 15 seed Josh Macera, 2-down.
Matrone was in a similar boat. He also shot 79 in qualifying, and was seeded fourth in the First Division, but he lost to No. 13 seed Sam Knowlton 1-down in the Round of 16.
