Hawks, Titans dominating on mats

It’s still early, yet the Hendricken and Toll Gate wrestling teams are staking their claims as the best in their respective divisions.

The Hawks are 4-0 in Division I-North with four lopsided victories to their name, and the Titans are 5-0 in Division II-North and haven’t been pushed very much either.

Toll Gate has beaten East Providence, East Greenwich, Burrillville, Moses Brown and Lincoln. Hendricken has prevailed over Mt. Hope, East Providence, Westerly and South Kingstown.

The Hawks will be tested this week, as they go up against Chariho on Wednesday and then North Providence and Warwick Vets on Thursday. Toll Gate will host Cranston East on Tuesday and then go up against Tolman on Wednesday.

Hawks remain unbeaten

The Bishop Hendricken basketball team didn’t have its best game of the season offensively on Friday, but the Hawks still had enough to out-last St. Raphael 46-43.

Hendricken is now 4-0 in Division I-South.

Matt Duffie and E.J. Nygren each had nine points for the Hawks, Garfield Coustard had seven, Justin Mazzulla had six and Kyle Henseler had five. St. Raphael’s Chris Luciano led all scorers with 20 points.

The Hawks were scheduled to take on North Kingstown on Monday, with results unavailable at press time. On Wednesday, they’ll host winless Cranston West at 7 p.m.

Lady Titans regain first place

The first-place Warwick Lady Titans (7-2) have been posting commanding victories throughout their 2013-14 campaign, and they maintained their recent success with a 2-1 victory over Bay View (6-3) on Sunday.

After an early goal in the second period by Bay View, Warwick’s defender Abby Ellis countered by making the most of a power play opportunity minutes later. Forwards Kelsey Holmes and Madison Balutowski had the assists.

Not long after, Ellis took it upon herself on an unassisted goal late in the middle of the second period. That goal and strong penalty killing by Holmes, forwards Natasha Savage and Alyssa Mathews gave the victory to the Titans.

Goaltender Gabriella Dicomitis, who saved a potential game-tying goal, shelved 31 saves in the victory.

Warwick will look to sustain its three-game winning streak against Smithfield on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Levy Rink.
