Hawks, Titans earn Injury Fund wins

All four Warwick high school football teams got their seasons underway last week with two-quarter long Injury Fund football games on Thursday and Friday.

On Thursday, Toll Gate – which moved down to Division III this season – got an emotional victory over D-II Warwick Vets 12-6 Nick Lemoie had a 39-yard rushing touchdown and Sean Vann had an 18-yard rushing score. Vets’ only score of the day came on the opening kickoff, as Mickenzey Pacheco returned it 88 yards for a score.

Beyond that, though, The Titans were in control, as they allowed just one first down while picking up 10 of their own. Quarterback Anthony Vann completed both passes on the day.

Prior to that game, Pilgrim, which also moved down to D-III this season, took on D-II Moses Brown and fell 14-0. The Pats moved the ball some, but were hindered by an injury to quarterback Rob Quaine on their first drive. Darren Grant replaced him, and completed two of his three pass attempts.

The Quakers got touchdowns from Andrew Howard and Joseph Voccola.

On Friday night, Bishop Hendricken got its title defense underway with a 7-0 victory over rival La Salle. Playing at La Salle and against the Rams for the first time ever in Injury Fund action, the Hawks struggled on offense but got the only points of the game in the second quarter on a 25-yard touchdown pass from John Toppa to Lee Moses.

The play happened on a fourth-and-25. Toppa, in his first year as the starting quarterback, lofted a fade to the right-corner of the end zone for Moses, a UMass commit. Tightly covered, Moses out-leaped the defender to haul in the pass inbounds for the score.

Gary Gibbs added 29 yards on the ground for the Hawks.

All four teams will be underway in full game, non-league action this weekend. On Friday, Hendricken will host Johnston, Vets will travel to Chariho and Pilgrim will host Smithfield. Toll Gate will travel to PCD/Wheeler/Juanita Sanchez on Saturday.
