The Bishop Hendricken golf team is off to a 4-0 start in league play this spring, and it kept up its solid early-season showing by winning the McCampbell Cup on Saturday at Cranston Country Club.

Playing against five other teams – including two-time defending state champion Barrington – in a match-play format, the Hawks finished with 17.5 points to edge out second-place La Salle, which had 15. North Kingstown was third with 12.5, Barrington was fourth with nine and Norton (Mass.) High School and Mount St. Charles tied for fifth with 8.5 points.

Justin Matrone and Joey Tucker were the top performers for Hendricken, as they teamed up to win all eight possible points in their two nine-hole matches. Duncan Marshall and Gavin Marshall won all four points on the front nine and then grabbed 1.5 points on the back nine to add 5.5 to the team’s total, and Zach White and Sean Irons won a total of four points. David Gooding and David Such Jr. added half a point.

The Hawks were scheduled to play in the annual Challenge Cup tournament today at Alpine Country Club, with the results unavailable at press time.
