Hawks come out slow, fall to Moses Brown

The Bishop Hendricken lacrosse team got off to a rough start in Friday night’s loss to Moses Brown. Because of that, the season is off to a rough start as well.

The Hawks never led, falling behind 9-3 at halftime to the Quakers. They played significantly better after the break, and got within three goals in the final two minutes, but the deficit was too much to make up in a 12-9 defeat.

Hendricken is now 1-2 on the season, with a 6-1 win over Portsmouth on Tuesday sandwiched between losses to La Salle and Moses Brown. It also beat Guilderland (N.Y.) 11-9 on Sunday in a non-league game.

“We played well in the second half,” said Hendricken head coach Kevin Murray after the Moses Brown game. “We just started off real slow and they’re a good team. We didn’t do the things at the beginning, and when you dig yourself a hole you’re not going to beat teams like that.”

Hendricken’s toughest stretch against the Quakers came after the teams exchanged early goals. Garrett Hanson struck first for Moses Brown just over a minute in, and Jonathan Finelli answered for the Hawks with a goal two minutes later.

From there, the Quakers took control. Colley Farnham, Drew Blanchard and Jack Stellman all scored before the end of the quarter to make it 4-1, and though Hendricken got one back on a goal by Conor Garrahy at the end of the first, Moses Brown scored the next four goals in the second quarter to take an 8-2 lead. Stellman scored twice, while Steve DeLeo and Alex Igliozzi scored as well.

Hendricken was playing without attackman Tyler Williams, which didn’t help its struggling offense.

“They kind of took it to us on the face-offs in the first half and they dominated the ball and then you’re trying to climb out of it,” Murray said. “It isn’t easy to do. We’re still trying to figure some things out.”

A goal by Andrew Fera with 51 seconds to play in the half looked like it would give Hendricken something to build on going into the break, but Moses Brown’s Will Wooten found the back of the net 30 seconds later to make it 9-3 at the half.

“I’d like to think you wouldn’t have to motivate guys all that much, but unfortunately I think maybe we had to,” Murray said. “You’ve got to come ready to play.”

The Quakers threatened to run away with the win early in the third quarter, as they won the opening two draws and scored off of both of them. DeLeo and Hanson did the honors, making it 11-3.

Still, the Hawks did have a run in them. Fera scored at the 9:21 mark on a breakaway started by Nick Mariano, and Andrew Grady bounced a shot in two minutes later from the left on a man-advantage. That made it 11-5 before DeLeo scored his third goal of the game to make it 12-5 entering the fourth.

In the final quarter, Hendricken played its best lacrosse of the day, but the deficit was simply too big. Moses Brown didn’t score a single goal on goalie Ryan Williams – who was playing in place of normal goaltender Sam Milnes – and the offense narrowed the gap considerably. Garrahy scored less than two minutes into the period and Reilly Miler made it 12-7 two minutes after that when he took the ball hard at the net and scored on goalie Will Chadwick.

“If we played the way we played in the second half in the first half, it would have been a different game,” Murray said.

The Hawks took two penalties in succession after that, limiting their possession, yet they still managed to get a goal from Finelli at the 2:25 mark and another from Finelli at the 1:40 mark.

That was as close as they could get though, as Finelli hit the post moments later and Moses Brown ended up with possession, running out the final 30 seconds.

“When we play aggressively we’re fine and when we don’t we’re not real good,” Murray said. “That’s the bottom line on that one.”

The Quakers improved to 2-1.

Hendricken is in for another early-season challenge today, as it travels to 3-0 Barrington for a 7 p.m. game. The Eagles already have a win over Moses Brown. The Hawks will also play at 0-3 North Kingstown on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

“We’ve got some young guys,” Murray said. “We’ll try to work on it.”
