Hawks finally get season underway, fall to Shea

The Bishop Hendricken soccer team was the last Division I team to open its regular season, but the extra preparation time didn’t do the Hawks much good on Wednesday.

Against Shea in its first game of the year, Hendricken gave up five first-half goals on its way to a 6-2 loss. Leandro Alves had a hat trick for the Raiders, and three other players added a goal apiece.

Hendricken’s goals came from Christian Kirby and Craig Conway. Alex Amado made eight saves in goal.

The Hawks’ next game was scheduled for Monday at Chariho, with results unavailable at press time. They’ll host Tolman Wednesday at 4 p.m.

’Canes drop non-league opener

The Warwick Vets football team wasn’t thrilled about the way it played in the Injury Fund against Toll Gate two weeks ago, and the ’Canes improved on some of those issues Friday night in their non-league opener against Chariho.

Vets, though, still made too many mistakes.

The ’Canes lost 27-13, with two of Chariho’s touchdowns coming on long fumble returns. Sal DeSantis returned one 90 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and Nate Tassell returned one 80 yards in the fourth quarter.

Vets fell behind 14-0 right out of the gate and trailed 20-6 at halftime. One bright spot was quarterback Nick Beaufort, who threw two touchdown passes for the ’Canes.

The loss doesn’t affect Vets in the standings, and it will still look to get its league slate off on the right foot on Friday when it opens up against Rogers at home at 7 p.m.

Vets volleyball earns

big win

The Warwick Vets girls’ volleyball team picked up its first win of the season last week, and the opponent was a perennial contender.

The ’Canes knocked off defending D-II runner-up Narragansett 3-2 last Thursday. Narragansett went 18-0 last season. Vets won the first two games 25-10 and 25-17, dropped the third and fourth games 18-25 and 19-25 and came back to win the deciding fifth game 15-11.

Shannon McCarthy had nine kills, while Samantha Beaufort had seven aces.

In Vets’ other game this season, it took a game but eventually lost 3-1 to unbeaten Cranston West. The ’Canes will try to go over .500 today when they host Westerly at 6:30 p.m.
