The Bishop Hendricken cross country team placed five runners in the top 100 at the New England Cross Country Championships held on Saturday at Wickham Park in Manchester, Conn. The Hawks’ overall team success earned them a fifth-place finish overall.

Dom Parlato, who finished in fifth at the Rhode Island State Championships, was Hendricken’s top finisher at the regional event. Parlato placed 24th in a time of 16:20. The runner-up at the state event, Tom Grizzetti, followed Parlato in 41st with a time of 16:26.

Avery Ingegneri, Wally Fitzhugh, and Tom McMahon rounded out Hendricken’s list of top-100 finishers. Ingegneri finished the race in a time of 16:55, slotting him in 67th in the region. Fitzhugh placed 79th in a time of 17:01, while Tom McMahon snuck into the top-100, placing 95th in a time of 17:12.

Hendricken had two other runners compete in the event—Nick Celico and Grant Gauthier—who finished in 103rd and 112th respectively.

La Salle Academy, however, stole the show. For the first time ever, the Rams were able to claim titles for both genders at the regional championships.

The boys’ Rhode Island state champion, D.J. Principe, was Rhode Island’s top finisher on Saturday as well. The La Salle sophomore finished in sixth with a time of 15:56, holding off a strong contingent of Hendricken runners.

The top girls’ finisher in Warwick was Toll Gate’s Erika Pena. Last weekend, Pena impressed at the state event, finishing 23rd overall in a time of 19:57.57. On Saturday, Pena finished in 169th in a time of 21.12.1.

Barrington High School’s Emma McMillan prevailed once again as Rhode Island’s top girl runner, after claiming the state crown a weekend ago. On Saturday, the junior finished fourth overall in the region in a time of 17.47.87.

Hendricken freshmen to play for state title

The Bishop Hendricken High School freshmen football team will play for the Division I title on Saturday, when the Hawks meet rival La Salle Academy at 12 p.m. at Cranston Stadium.

The Hawks earned the No. 2 seed after a 5-1 regular season and beat Cranston East in the semifinals to secure a spot in the final, while the undefeated Rams were the state’s top-seed and cruised past East Providence High School in the semis.
