Hawks get back on track

The Bishop Hendricken basketball team didn’t have the best final few weeks of the season, but it ended the regular season on a high note with a pair of victories over the weekend.

The Hawks went just 3-3 over the final six games, but had lost two in a row before righting the ship with a 70-41 victory over South Kingstown on Friday and a 54-51 win over Cranston East on Sunday.

Matt Duffie was Hendricken’s high-scorer in both games, tallying 23 against South and then 14 against East. Garfield Coustard had 10 against South and 13 against East. Chris O’Brien had 10 against South, while Justin Mazzulla added eight against East.

With those two games in the books, the Hawks are one of two Division I teams to be finished with the regular season – along with Hope – and they’re in a solid spot. At 13-5, Hendricken is currently tied for second in the statewide standings, though it will likely drop a few places as the rest of the state ends the regular season. La Salle is the only team ahead of it at the moment with a 16-1 record.

Coventry, which beat Hendricken by one point on Wednesday, is tied with the Hawks with 13 total points but still has one game to go with North Kingstown, which is just one point behind the Oakers and Hawks in the standings. Also capable of catching Hendricken are Smithfield, West Warwick and Barrington.

Regardless of where the Hawks end up, they’ll still have a spot in the state tournament locked up when they take the court for the upcoming Division I tournament. As a likely top-six seed, Hendricken will receive a bye through the preliminary around of the tournament into the quarterfinal round. The prelims are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, with the quarters slated for next Tuesday or Wednesday. The location of the quarterfinals is still to be determined. The semifinals are the following Friday, with the D-I finals scheduled for Sunday, March 9.
