Hawks into regional final

GEM: Mike King, pictured earlier this year, tossed a two-hitter as Hendricken beat Portsmouth in Thursday's playoff game.

Pitching well is always a key in the playoffs, and the Bishop Hendricken baseball team is doing it better than anybody so far. After Tom Pannone pitched six shutout innings in a 7-2 opening-round win over East Greenwich last Tuesday, teammate Mike King was even better on Thursday. The junior tossed a complete-game two-hitter as the Hawks rolled past Portsmouth 9-1 for a spot in the winners’ bracket final of the Region 4 tournament.

King was dominant against a Portsmouth team that had beaten defending state champion Cranston West 10-0 two days earlier. He struck out four and allowed just a run in the second inning.

While King dominated, the Hendricken offense wasn’t too shabby either. The Hawks pounded out 13 hits, building a 5-1 lead before blowing the game open with four runs in the sixth.

Hendricken is now sitting pretty in the tournament and needs just one more win for a spot in the final four. Whichever team comes out of the losers’ bracket would have to beat the Hawks twice to advance.

East Greenwich was scheduled to play Portsmouth on Monday to determine which team plays Hendricken. The regional final is scheduled for today at 4 p.m. at Hendricken.
