Hawks take JV state title

Bishop Hendricken rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Portsmouth 4-3 last Tuesday at McCarthy Field to capture the junior varsity state championship. Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning, shortstop Drew Almonte singled home Justin Gist to cut the Portsmouth lead to 3-1. In the bottom of the fourth, second basemen, Brendan Conley hit a two-out, two-run double to left to tie the score. Right fielder Jason Comeau followed with a triple to right center to put the Hawks up 4-3. Pitcher Marc Andrews, in relief of starter Caleb Wurster, pitched three scoreless innings. Closer Joe Maynard got out of a bases loaded, no-out jam in the sixth inning as Hendricken – aided by a defense that threw out three runners at home plate – hung on for the victory.
