Hawks take fourth at golf states

Simply put, the Rhode Island State Championship golf tournament didn’t go the way Hendricken envisioned it.

After an undefeated season that featured the lowest scores statewide, the Hawks couldn’t duplicate their success on Tuesday and Wednesday at Cranston Country Club, finishing a distant fourth place overall.

Moses Brown captured its first title in school history with a combined two-day total of 631, led by the three-under par 139 from state champion freshman Will Dickson. La Salle finished second with 640, Portsmouth took third with a 655 and the Hawks were next with a 659.

The fourth-place showing was the lowest for a Hendricken team since it finished eighth in 2011, and it extended the Hawks’ state title drought to 13 years.

“We needed much more solid play from our seniors and we didn’t get it,” said Hendricken head coach Rick Angeli. “Same as last year – we put ourselves in a hole early on.”

Hendricken trailed La Salle by 15 strokes and Moses Brown by nine strokes after day one, but they were hoping to rebound on day two with some help from the weather.

On a rainy, windy day, the game plan was to try to maintain while the other teams made the mistakes and came back toward the Hawks. The other teams came back, but Hendricken went backwards too.

“Today we were hoping with the weather that some teams would come back to us – which they did – but we didn’t rise to the challenge and play as well as we needed to,” Angeli said.

One player who did make a substantial impact on the field was freshman Joe Tucker, who followed up his opening round 76 with an 81 in day two – tied for the fifth-best score of the tough day – to end up in sixth place overall with a 157.

Dickson’s 139 was 14 strokes better than second-place finisher Matt Corio of La Salle with a 153, and Jake Bauer of Portsmouth came in third with a 155. Barrington’s Lyle Richardson and East Greenwich’s Ryan Malloy finished tied for fourth.

Tucker, playing in his first state tournament, was next.

“I’m very pleased with my two scores, since it was so crappy today,” Tucker said. “I hit the ball really good. My putting has been really good lately.”

The Hawks’ second-best score belonged to senior captain and No. 1 player Justin Matrone, who put himself in a good spot with a 78 on day one and came back with an 84 – which included a triple-bogey on the final hole – to finish with a 162, tied for 11th place.

It was Matrone’s third consecutive top 12 finish at the state tournament, which earns him a place in the New England Championship. Tucker will also have an invite to New Englands this year.

“Matrone, a four-year guy, has performed well,” Angeli said. “He’s been a good captain and a good kid.”

Hendricken’s next-best score was from senior Duncan Marshall, who had scores of 79 and 92 to finish in a tie for 23rd. After that, freshman Sean Irons had an 83 and a 90 for a 173, Sal Savastano went 87-88 for a 175 and Zach White went 90-93 for a 183.

Irons, despite a drop off on day two, was instrumental in Hendricken making the cut on day one thanks to his 83, which the team used as its fourth score.

“I would say we had three solid scores on day one,” Angeli said. “We were lucky to back it up with our fourth score yesterday. Sean Irons shot 10-over on the front then came back with a nice 38 on the back.”

Yet, there was still too much in the way for Hendricken to get over the state title hump.

The team will say goodbye to only two seniors in its regular rotation – Matrone and Marshall – while Irons and Tucker are freshmen, White is a sophomore and Savastano is a junior. There are also plenty of other players who should push for time next year.

“I’m disappointed,” Angeli said. “We had a great season. We’re young. We have two freshmen and two sophomores playing. We’re really looking at a bright future here.”

The Hawks should be right back in the mix.

“I’m excited for the next three years,” Tucker said. “I think we’re going to do well.”
