As expected, the House of Representatives extended air quality monitoring at Green Airport through July 31, 2017, although where the monitoring equipment will be located has yet to be decided.
The extension of air monitoring, introduced by Rep. Eileen Naughton (D-Dist. 21, Warwick) at the request of Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin, is part of the memorandum of understanding the city and the Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) reached ending legal action questioning Federal Aviation Administration approval of an extension to the main runway. Under the current law, the air quality monitoring requirements would have expired this July 31.
“The health and well being of residents that [live] near T.F. Green Airport remain a top priority for his office and it is critical to continue to monitor the air quality to ensure it is maintained [at] acceptable levels,” Kilmartin said in a statement.
“As long as the airport is in operation, we need to know what it’s pumping into the air,” said Naughton. “There are people living nearby, breathing these substances, inhaling these potentially dangerous particulates into their lungs. We need to continue monitoring the air long-term. We owe it to the neighbors of the airport.”
The air monitoring station was moved last summer to provide for construction of softball and soccer fields to replace Winslow Park on the northeast side of the airport.
The issue of air quality will also come up tonight at 6 when RIAC considers where to site the station. The meeting will be held in the Mary Brennan boardroom.
