Helen M. (Sweeney) Monroe, age 86, of Algonquin Drive, Warwick, died on Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at The Miriam Hospital in Providence. She was the wife of James E. Monroe for 61 years.

Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Edward E. and Helen F. (Moriarty) Sweeney, she lived in Warwick for the last 25 years. Mrs. Monroe was employed in loss prevention at the Ann & Hope store in Seekonk for 20 years before retiring in 1991. Earlier in her life she was employed as a comptroller operator at Brown & Sharpe Mfg. and as an office manager at Curran & Burton Oil Co. She was active at the Pilgrim Senior Center in Warwick where she was a member of the “Knit Wits.”

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, J. Wayne Monroe and his wife, Dimitria of Lincoln; a daughter, Beverly A. Phillips of Warwick; four brothers, Edward E. Sweeney, Jr. of Florida, Gerald F. Sweeney of Johnston, Michael J. Sweeney of Florida, and Kenneth W. Sweeney of Warwick; four grandchildren, Kimberly A. Phillips, Kenneth J. Phillips, Megan E. Monroe, and Bridget S. Vien; a great-grandson, Bruce Phillips; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. She was the mother of the late Mark L. Monroe, and the sister of the late Dennis A. Sweeney.

Her funeral service was held on Saturday, July 30, in the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick. Burial was in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
