Bishop Hendricken senior Patrick Flanagan has been named the Man of the Year for this year’s graduating class. This award is given to a graduating senior who most exemplifies the ideals of the Hendricken man, and President John Jackson presented it to Flanagan at Hendricken’s Academic Honors Convocation about two weeks ago.

To be given such a distinction, Flanagan says that he “can only feel humbled” when he “looks back at all the truly great men who have won the award in the past.”

As for how the recipient is decided, students ultimately select the winner by popular vote, but the faculty decides the ballot of the eight candidates they must choose from.

Flanagan, who graduated in the top-five of his class, will attend the University of Alabama next fall on a full scholarship. This is something he is “very excited about.” Flanagan plans to study International Economics.

When asked about his favorite teacher, he said it is between Timothy Deely and Steve Salomone.”

In addition to hitting the books hard, Flanagan also spent his fair share of time on the athletic fields playing golf, lacrosse, cross country, and hockey during the course of his high school career, not to mention being senior class president.

With regards to his budding golf career, he jokingly said that, “I try to be realistic about things. With that being said, the Web.com tour is in my rear-view mirror, but school will always be the most important.”

Flanagan said he has been most influenced “first and foremost by my parents.” Other influences include his teachers and unnamed fellow student nicknamed “Squid,” who showed him “what a man is supposed to be.”

With regards to Flanagan’s favorite Hendricken memory, he said: “I have no idea… but I really enjoyed my four years, especially those times that I was playing hockey and golf.”

Three things he would like to accomplish are living in Ireland, working in a federal government agency and winning a men’s hockey league tournament.
