The Bishop Hendricken cross country team finished fourth at the Nike Northeast Regional on Saturday, just missing out on a spot at nationals. Only the top two teams qualify for that event, but with just one senior running in their top seven, the Hawks still made quite an impression despite not making the cut.
Running as the Hawks Track Club, the squad was led by freshman Michael Potter, who took 19th while covering the 5K course in 16:41.5. Potter was the top freshman performer in the race by far; the next best freshman finished 82nd.
Sophomore Colin Tierney was just behind Potter in 22nd, finishing with a time of 16:44.1 Junior Tyler Henseler finished 36th, sophomore Collin Manning grabbed 44th, junior Connor Doyle ran 53rd, senior Mark Vuono finished 74th and junior Greg Beaudette rounded out the lineup in 158th.
The Hawks finished with 136 points. Brothers XC Club of New Jersey surged to first place with 38 points by putting four runners in the top 11. The Titans Track Club of Massachusetts finished second with 117 points, and the Blue Devil Track Club of New Jersey took third with 124 points.
Chariho’s Mike Marsella, the state and New England champ, ran to third place in 16:14.7, which earned him a spot at nationals. He and his Chariho teammates finished seventh overall.
