HAWKS COMPETE AT NATIONALS: Hendricken’s Academic Decathlon Team recently competed in the national academic competition in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The team earned the invitation after winning the state championship this past March. They finished 22nd out of 32 teams from around the country (including an international team from London). Though they did not place as high as they would have liked the hawks credit their trip as a wonderful learning experience. Standing from left: Tom Roy, Evan LeComte, Ryan Sutyla, Dax Tucker, and G. Thomas Esmay Kneeling are: Shane McElroy, Garabed Koosherian, and Anthony Abel.

Coach Sister Carol Anne Murray agreed that the interaction between teams was greatly beneficial for the students.

“Meeting kids from all over the country and the team from London was a great experience for the kids,” said Sister Carol Anne. “These are the kind of kids our students will be competing with next fall [in college].”

Seniors G. Thomas Esmay, Anthony Abel, Garabed Koosherian, Dax Tucker, Evan Lecomte and junior Shane McElroy accompanied Sister Carol Anne, Roy, and Sutyla on the trip. The team faced extremely competitive opposition in the Decathlon and finished in 22nd out of the 32 teams.

“Even though we didn’t do as well as we had hoped, the kids had a wonderful time and had a great experience,” said Sister Carol Anne.

The highlight for Hendricken was Esmay’s bronze medal finish in the essay portion of the competition. He focused his essay on his passion for theater, which he plans on pursuing next fall at New York University.

Hendricken earned the honor of representing Rhode Island in Albuquerque by defending their state title last March. Under Sister Carol Anne’s leadership, it is their third championship in four years.

The Hendricken team, as well as the individual senior gold medallists from the state competition, will be honored for their accomplishments at a Governor’s Reception at the State House on May 17. The medallists will receive $500 scholarship awards from the Speaker of the House.
