Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick continued its string of successes at the University of Rhode Island’s annual High School Chemistry Contest recently. Hendricken won the Division I and Division II team competitions, and Hendricken students took first and second place in the Division I individual contest and second and third in Division II. A student from East Greenwich High School won the Division II individual contest.

About 300 students from 14 area high schools competed in the 45-question, multiple-choice exam, which must be completed in an hour. Prizes were awarded to the top team and top three individuals in each of two divisions. Students with less than one full year of high school chemistry compete in Division I, while students with more than one year of high school chemistry compete in Division II. Those enrolled in advanced placement classes compete in Division II.

URI has hosted the contest since 1921.

In Division I, Hendricken’s team of Nicholas Williams, Miles Temel, Riley Chabot, Andrew Denkewicz, Christian Kirby, Andrew Sarazen, Dongjun Seung and Nicholas Roy took first place. Rocky Hill School placed second, and Barrington High School placed third. In the individual competition, Hendricken’s Miles Temel placed first and Nicholas Williams placed second, followed by Ian Sabula of Barrington High School in third.

In Division II, Hendricken’s team of Kevin Sutyla, Tyler Williams, Michael Morisseau, Tim Madsen, Patrick Flanagan, Daniel Kim, Kiel Fuller, Logan Giroux and John Hindinger placed first, followed by East Greenwich High School and South Kingstown High School. Connor Xiong of East Greenwich High School placed first in the Division II individual contest, followed by Hendricken’s Kevin Sutyla and Tyler Williams.

Hendricken has had tremendous success at the Chemistry Contest in recent years. In four of the last five years it has won both the Division I team competition and the Division I individual contest.
