Bishop Hendricken’s Jim Doyle has been named the Boys’ Coach of the Year for Rhode Island by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The honor was bestowed upon Doyle after a 2015-16 season in which the Hawks’ track and field and cross country programs compiled a total of six state championships – cross country, indoor and outdoor track at the freshman level, indoor and outdoor track for junior varsity and outdoor track in varsity.
“It’s a very big honor,” Doyle said of receiving the award. “It’s really special to me and it’s a great accomplishment. It reflects tremendously on how fortunate I’ve been to have a great coaching staff and great athletes at Bishop Hendricken High School.”
According to Doyle, he and his coaching staff leaned on the athletes to stay focused for the entirety of the year, as they knew their team would be tested by some stiff competition. The athletes responded, and that commitment translated into positive results.
“We had a very successful year,” Doyle said. “We knew it would be a tough, competitive year with La Salle being so talented. Myself and my coaches kept reminding our guys to always stay focused. We had a total team commitment from all of our guys.”
This year marks the first time that Doyle has received the Boys’ Coach of the Year honor from the USTFCCCA, as it has only been distributing the award since 2014.
This is the second honor that Doyle has received this summer. The longtime Hawks’ coach was also awarded the Rhode Island Coach of the Year honor for the 2016 outdoor track and field season after leading Hendricken to a varsity state title.
