His pledge to represent Ward 2

Posted

To the Editor:

In walking to thousands of doors in our neighborhoods of Norwood, Lakewood and Pilgrim, I listened as residents described dozens of concerns.

I took quick action in responding to these concerns: contacting several city departments, requesting that potholes be filled or roads repaired; reporting the need for soundproofing and maintenance of Airport Corporation land; traffic studies and safety signage; police patrols and enforcement; street lights replaced; and maintenance of city property.  I will continue my advocacy on residents’ behalf, seeking the best possible results.

I’m Jeremy Rix and I am running for City Council in Warwick, Ward 2. I am advocating for policies that treat fairly Warwick’s residents and small businesses. I also see ways I can help the city as a whole, from making sure that our first responders have the equipment that they need to helping businesses and residents cut through red tape.

One specific area of improvement is our city’s website and email system. The website needs to be kept more up-to-date, from listing upcoming events to replacing outdated maps. But even more importantly, it is unacceptable that the email accounts that city employees rely on were down intermittently over weeks or months earlier this year. I could not be certain that emails I sent on behalf of neighbors were going through until I called to follow up. If I had such difficulty reaching city officials, what about people who aren’t as familiar with city departments?  And what effect has this had on productivity?

My professional experience has been helpful in understanding the city budget, to edit ordinances and advocate for change. I graduated from RIC and became certified to teach high school history before graduating from RWU Law and passing the Rhode Island and Massachusetts bar exams. I have drafted more than a dozen ordinances and resolutions enacted by Rhode Island towns. I have the skills necessary to effectively work for the people and with the other members of the City Council.

I am proud to say that I am the endorsed candidate of the Democratic Ward Committee. I have earned the confidence and support of Councilor Tom Chadronet, 2014 candidate Mike Zarum, and former City Council President Bruce Place. The reason I am going to thousands of doors is to listen to the residents here, address concerns as best I can, and earn their support.

Ward 2 needs a councilor familiar with its neighborhoods and schools. I attended Norwood Elementary, Aldrich JHS and Pilgrim from K-12. After graduating from Pilgrim in 2004, I worked my way through RIC as a driver for Cosmic Pizza. I’ve been a member of the Norwood Neighborhood Association since high school. I currently work on the Crime Watch and Leadership Committees. I also serve as a member of Warwick’s Charter Review Commission.

I pledge to represent you and I ask for your vote in the Democratic Primary on September 13.  If you have concerns that need attention, please feel free to contact me at RixForWarwick@Gmail.com or by phone at (401) 263-5559.

Thank you to all of my volunteers and supporters. Warwick is a great place to live with friendly people. It's nice to see so many people out in the neighborhood, too, taking care of plants or lawns, taking a walk, or just chatting and enjoying the weather -- although maybe not as many in this heat wave. It's uplifting and encouraging when I can knock on a door and chat with someone about the issues for 10 or 15 minutes, or when people offer water on a hot day.

I invite you to contact me if you have any questions and hope to earn your support.

I read the letter to the editor by Jeremy Rix about his run for City Council, I have known Jeremy for some time, he was my strategist and street manager during my campaign for State Rep in 2010. I know he will be a very good Councilman, he is smart, involved with his community and honest. Jeremy will stay committed to his constituents and alway's be responsive to his communities needs. I have endorsed Jeremy because he will go out of his way to help Ward 2 be and stay a great place to live.

I've known Jeremy Rix for over a decade now, and I can't think of a person more suited to be a public servant. Jeremy is earnest, thoughtful, and cares deeply about the town he grew up in and still lives in now. I know a lot of people make jokes about politicians and lawyers being dishonest, but that's so far from who Jeremy is as a person -- he takes pride in his work, and I know he'll do an excellent job representing Ward 2.

The City Council doesn't need another Lawyer, and if his is getting good praises from Bennett. My God People vote for the other person, we don't need anymore progressive Democratic in City or State offices in Rhode Island.
