Three Pilgrim High School freshmen won honors at the History Day contest held May 2 at Providence College. One of them, Sophie Carter, is planning to compete in the nationals to be held June 14-18 in the Nation’s Capitol. From left: Mackenzie Fraser, an avid sailor at Edgewood Yacht Club, picked Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, Bristol designer and builder of America’s Cup boats, for her documentary. She won a $150 award, which she may spend to buy a cover for her 420 sailboat. Dylan Bowden profiled former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who was shot in 2007. He said he picked her because she did so much to bring democracy and women’s equality to Pakistan. Sophie chose World War II spy Virginia Hall, who provided the Allies with details on German movements from France during the war. Sophie won a second place in the individual documentary portion of the competition.
