Honoring a veteran

The Pilgrim Senior Center hosted a special Memorial Day Lunch on Tuesday to recognize Jerry Latham, a World War II veteran and former Senior Center volunteer, for his service to the country. Latham, who turned 104 on May 18, served on the battleship the U.S.S. New York as a member of the U.S. Navy. He was chief storekeeper and was in the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. During the event, Latham was presented with a patriotic quilt made by the Senior Center Quilting Group and a card signed by the first graders at John Wickes Elementary School. “Grandma” Gloria Walker (pictured far right), a volunteer in the first grade classrooms at Wickes, explained she and first grade teachers Jen Travison and Kate Herrington came up with the idea to honor a veteran as part of the Giving Back program, teaching first graders how to give back of themselves. The students made the card, while Walker and her quilting group made the blanket. Latham attended the event with his daughter, Nancy Cornish, and his wife Doris. All In A Chord, a Rhode Island all-female barbershop singing group, performed patriotic songs during the event. (Beacon photo by Jennifer Rodrigues)
