Residents at Greenwich Farms at Warwick paid tribute to the veterans in their midst and to all those who have served in the military at a series of events Tuesday that included a flag ceremony, brunch and visit from Congressman James Langevin. In celebration, a dining room at the center displayed the flags of each branch of the military as well as photographs of residents while in the service. Among the many featured were Doris Vieweg McKnight, who served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 as a secretary on a base in Pensacola, Fla. She loved the experience, saying it got her out of Rhode Island and enabled her to see other parts of the country. Ray Gardiner, who served as a crew chief in the U.S. Army Air Corps, saw much more than this country. Gardiner, 94, was stationed in Iceland in the early stage of World War II and worked on P51 Mustang fighters on bases in Ireland, England and France. He spent eight years in active service and another 12 in the Air Force Reserves.
