I exchanged my needle and alcohol for the cross

(A Modern Day “Amazing Grace?”)

I need you Jesus and your love.

I’m reaching out for all this stuff; This empty stuff, stuff, stuff.

Heroin, alcohol, lust and mindless shows were never enough, nuff, nuff.

The cravings I cannot fill in living apart from you and your true love, love, love.

I was a proud peacock with my head held high.

So, I fill my days living a lie - flirting with my inner craving to die.

Now I know I need you, Christ, to fill this soulful hole or else I will fill it with a needle, a bed, a beautician, a bottle, a bank account,  a bag or more stuff, stuff , stuff.

I wanted freedom. I got slavery.

I wanted life. I got closer to death.

I wanted rest. I got sleeplessness.

I wanted relief. I got more pain. I wanted connection. I got isolation. I wanted hope. I got despair.

Jesus Christ is what I need, need, need. Now, I can clearly see. Please take away my vanity.

Restore me back to sanity.

Jesus Christ, I surrender to you.

God loves me? Is this really, true?

Yes, I now believe and I am willing to receive to fill my true need.

Adam, where are you? I am here. Right here!

I choose you now. Take away this rotten apple and replace it with Your Word.

I open my consciousness to you, Dear Lord.

Warwick

Kathleen A. Gainor, RN, MSN has worked in emergency nursing for over ten years and has been a nurse for over thirty. She, herself, does not and never did use drugs or alcohol, but has cared for many people suffering from addictions. She said the purpose of this poem is to raise awareness that spirituality plays a role in addiction recovery. She has cared for people who have harmed their lives through the use of alcohol and drugs, but believes there is always hope with Christ, that is, in the Cross of Christ. This poem was inspired and written while attending Spring Green Memorial Church’s Thursday evening Bible study located at 1350 Warwick Ave, Warwick. Supper is at 6 pm and Bible study follows at 6:30 p.m.
