(Incoherent, boring, dense drivel)

We sat there trying to make a connection to this incoherent, boring, dense drivel, trying to keep awake as the self-centered, drug-craved characters talked endlessly about things we had no interest in.

Fans of Thomas Pynchon’s work may find this stuff to be mind-blowing and cool, but we didn’t get it.

Joaquin Phoenix plays a pot-smoking private detective in California during the 1970s. “Doc” is contacted by his former girlfriend when her current wealthy boyfriend turns up missing. He investigates, carrying on endless conversations with all kinds of uninteresting people. There is little action, a lot of incoherent dialogue, the girlfriend’s fuzzy voiceovers and very little redeeming social value.

In spite of this, some critics and fans are calling the movie a classic and praising its muddled style. The movie goes on and on for over two hours, which was more than we could take.

Rated R for excessive drug use, profanity and lack of any morality.
