INSIGHT to host free medication workshop

INSIGHT, a non-profit organization that provides programs and services for Rhode Islanders who are blind and visually impaired, is hosting a free workshop on strategies for managing medications.

The workshop will be held on Thursday, Feb. 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at INSIGHT, located at 43 Jefferson Boulevard in Warwick. The event is open to anyone living with vision loss as well as friends, family members and caregivers.

During the workshop, staff from INSIGHT will demonstrate simple strategies for organizing, labeling, dispensing and taking medications independently. Representative from CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens and the Veterans Administration will also be demonstrating their talking prescription bottle devices and Phillips Lifeline will provide an overview of their automated medication reminder and dispenser system. A complimentary light lunch will also be available.

According to INSIGHT Executive Director Christopher Butler, managing medications can sometimes be a challenge for people living with vision loss.

“This is an issue that many of our clients discuss with us. It can be a particular challenge for people who take a number of different medications during the day,” he said. “Because they cannot see the label on the prescription bottle and may not be able to distinguish different pills, there is a risk of taking the wrong medication at the wrong time. Many times our clients will rely on a spouse or caregiver to dispense their medication for that reason. The purpose of this workshop is to help people learn how they can take on that task independently so that they can do it themselves if they want to or if they find themselves in a situation where they need to.”

For more information or to register for the event contact INSIGHT’s Director of Vision Rehabilitation, Rick Andrade, at 941-3322, ext. 109, or visit the agency’s website, www.in-sight.org.
