The inaugural Iggy’s Doughboy Dash took place on Sunday afternoon with over 400 participants. The event raised $33,512.00 for the A-T Children’s Project to conduct research on ataxia-telangiectasia, a rare, degenerative disease that affects 1 in 40,000 children. Most inflicted children require a wheelchair by age 10 and will pass away from respiratory failure or cancer by their early 20s due to immunodeficiency.
The Doughboy Dash was held in honor of 13-year-old Andrew Martin and seven-year-old Zach McMillan, two Warwick boys living with the disease. Iggy’s Doughboys & Chowder House owner Dave Gravino, a family friend of the Martins, assisted with the planning and executive of the event, which had participants running or walking a one-mile route in Oakland Beach, eating a dozen bite-sized doughboys and repeating the one-mile route. The event also featured a raffle, silent auction and free buffet for participants.
