In defense of Temple Am David

To the Editor:

This letter is to clear up some misconceptions and misinformation in last week’s article about the West Bay Community Jewish Center (WBCJC).

In the first sentence, there are already two mistakes. First, “temple” is defined by the dictionary to be an edifice, not a meeting place. The correct term should be “congregation.” Second, as a matter of public record, WBCJC was incorporated in April, not in June, as the article states.

In addition, the article mentions the Temple Am David Religious School in a sentence immediately preceding Mr. Feinstein’s comment about locating “the school” in Cranston, implying that the Louis and Goldie Chester School was moving. It is not moving; it remains on-site at Temple Am David as it has since its naming a few years ago, and where the previously unnamed school resided for many years before that. It is the WBCJC school that does not have a definite location as of the date of your article. It seems many mentions of our Temple are added to the article for the sole purpose of denigrating us – what bearing does our situation have on WBCJC?

Temple Am David, like many organizations and people in these trying times, is working hard to meet its financial obligations. While the building is still on the market, there have been no offers, and, as such, we will continue to hold our weekly Shabbat services and monthly get-togethers in the temple that has nurtured us and our children for many years, and, with the dedication of our devoted congregation, will continue to nurture us for years to come.

Bravo, Michael, for clearing that up. Another misconception to be cleared is that the location of their school was just finalized. That's a downright lie, as it gas been advertised at that address since its inception.
