To the Editor:
I read recently where the Rhode Island Interscholastic League has, for 20 years or so, allowed football players to play three games in an 11-day period. Thursday, Nov. 28, Thanksgiving Day, was game #1; followed by Tuesday, Dec. 3, semi-final playoff game is game #2; ending with Super Bowl game Saturday, Dec. 7 as game #3. Imagine, three football games in 11 days are insane with today’s “hot” topic on player concussions!
Why are football games normally played once a week? A minimum of seven days is needed for rest and recovery for this “highly contact sport.” That is why baseball and basketball games in high school are allowed to play two to three times a week, as they are not high contact sports. Football, however, is not meant to be played more than once a week – minimum!
It seems to me, as a former player, coach and athletic director, the Interscholastic League is making decisions that are putting your sons and daughters “in harm’s way!”
