In memory of CJ Buckley

The 14th version of the CJ Buckley Regatta opened Monday at Goddard Park with 24 teams and 156 young sailors from 14 states, the Virgin Islands and Mexico turning out for two days of team racing on Greenwich Bay. As they have since their friend CJ Buckley died of brain cancer, brothers Justin and Kyle Assad worked to make the regatta a success. They’ve had a lot of help from the start from the Baeder, Langella, Millard and Mutha families and more recently from the Coughlins, Elsons and Wehrs. The regatta serves as the Club 420 (a type of sailboat) Junior Team national championship. As he has done in the past, Rob Hurd, who coached CJ and is the sailing coach at Taber Academy, assisted, as did the East Greenwich Yacht Club where volunteers made and bagged sandwiches for the young sailors. Seen here are CJ’s parents, Lucy and Carter Buckley, with Karen Murtha holding the t-shirt she designed for this year’s regatta. (Warwick Beacon photos)
