It was a tough day scouting for food

Posted

Brenda Denette and her husband, Frank, have worked the Scouting for Food Drive ever since it started 27 years ago. But then, they have been involved in the scouting program for 35 years.

Brenda, who chaired district collections Saturday from 38 troops and packs, said, “We’re not seeing the same level of donations [as prior years].” She’s not sure why, speculating it could be one or a combination of three factors, including Saturday’s rainy weather, the weekend before the election and the decision to switch from distributing plastic bags for the collection to door cards reminding people of the drive. Frank said the door reminders got blown off and in some cases were bunched up with political leaflets also being distributed throughout neighborhoods.

Neither the Narragansett Council of Boy Scouts nor the Rhode Island Community Food Bank could say yesterday how much food was collected in the drive, as the count hadn’t been finalized.
