With music setting the tone and an ample dose of exuberance to get outdoors and enjoy some beautiful weather, Toll Gate students stepped forward to compete in a number of team and individual competitions that were all part of a visit to the school from the U.S. Army on Thursday. “They were the friendliest to the military or could benefit most from the visit,” said recruiter Sgt. Josh Leonard when asked how the school was picked for the visit. It may have helped that he is a Toll Gate grad. The Army team and their trucks of equipment – the “Army Strong Challenge” – also visited Pilgrim, the only other Rhode Island school where they made a stop. Toll Gate’s Sue Clegg, director of physical education and health, also had a hand in lining up the visit. She was anxious to get the kids involved in a physical activity and outside. Leonard said activities offered during the visit aim to encourage fitness and teamwork while introducing students to the Army. On average, he said, one out of 100 students has an interest in going into the military. But it takes more than that. He said that less than half of 1 percent qualify to serve. (Warwick Beacon photos)
