Initially designed to accommodate 88 homeless men, Harrington House in Cranston is now providing shelter to as many as 130 men a night. Christine Foisy of the House of Hope that runs the program explained the agency was able to procure steel bunk beds that the state was going to otherwise scrap and get them painted so as to expand accommodations. The men are required to leave the shelter during the day, but a select few who have abided by house rules serve as volunteers to clean and maintain the shelter during the day. Other earned privileges include selecting a bunk (as pictured) that they can make their own. In addition to shelter, the House of Hope provides the men with counseling in an effort for them to find employment and eventually not just a bunk but a home of their own. Also, as this picture shows, some bunks are still without mattresses. It’s a need the House of Hope is seeking to address, although, said Foisy, the bunks are still occupied.
