James J. Hopkins Sr., 84, a lifelong resident of Johnston, passed away July 6, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband for 63 years of Eileen (Smyth) Hopkins.
Jim was a Navy veteran of World War II and an employee of the U.S. government at Davisville CB Center for 42 years before retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Davisville Credit Union board of directors.
Jim was a proud alumnus of LaSalle Academy, class of 1947. He was one of the founding fathers of Johnston Little League as well as a past president and member of its Hall of Fame. He loved watching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in any of their activities. Jim, most of all, was an avid fan of Notre Dame Fighting Irish football. He was an active member of the Smithfield Senior Center. He was a longtime communicant of St. Thomas Church in Providence and, most recently, at St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Johnston.
Jim was the son of the late John and Anna (Geary) Hopkins. He was the brother of John Hopkins of North Ft. Myers, Fla. and Virginia A. Gammino of Warwick. He was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Hopkins and Anna Duffy. He is the father of James Jr. and his wife, Lois, Ken Sr. and his wife, Mary, Chris and his wife, Cathy, Colleen and her late husband, Robert Willner, Joseph and his wife, Alyssa, and Kevin and his wife, Beth. He leaves his grandchildren, Scott and his wife, Shelley, Ken Jr. and his wife, Cristina, Matthew and his wife, Becky, Lauren, Katie, Danny, Brent, Jared, Kirstyn, Bobby and David, and his great-grandchildren, Shane, Shawn, Avalena and Lyla.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held July 9 in St. Robert Bellarmine Chuch, 1804 Atwood Ave., Johnston. Burial with military honors will be in Rhode Is ald Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visitation was July 8 in Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Route 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville.
