James J. Kelly Sr.

James J. Kelly Sr., 87, died January 25, 2012 surrounded by his family, who were the true focus of his life. He was the husband of the late G. Patricia (O’Brien) Kelly, with whom he ran a successful nursing home in Newport for many years.
Born in Providence, he was a son of the late George and Jenny (Goodwin) Kelly. Mr. Kelly was employed at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum for 15 years, retiring in 2009. He was a graduate of LaSalle Academy, Class of 1942. He attended Brown University on a scholarship before serving with the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II.
He is survived by his son, James J. Kelly Jr. and his wife, Julianne; a daughter, Joan Kelly Goes and her husband, Carl; and a son, Stephen F. Kelly. He is survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was the brother of Eugene Kelly and the late George, Francis and John Kelly and Doris Gay. He was the father of the late Diane Kelly and grandfather of the late Robert Goes.
His funeral was held Jan. 30 from Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave., Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. William Church, Pettaconsett Ave. Burial with military honors was in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
