Joan M. (Wright) Soares, age 73, of North Kingstown, and formerly of Warwick, died on September 9, 2012, at South County Hospital.
Born December 28, 1938, a daughter of the late Clifford Wright and Grace E. (Atkinson) Buchanan, she lived in Warwick and Florida before returning to North Kingstown 5 years ago. At the age of 13, she was a Warwick hero when she saved the Duquette family of five from a house fire in Oakland Beach.
Mrs. Soares was employed as a switchboard operator at The Miriam Hospital in Providence for 11 years, retiring in 1996.
She is survived by two sons, Anthony O. Soares, III of Old Town, Fla. and Jason A. Soares of North Scituate, two daughters, Deborah L. Barsoian of North Kingstown and Joanie C. Soares of North Kingstown; two sisters, Diane Williamson of Reading, Mass. and Pamela Brown of Smithfield, a brother, Thomas L. Grace of Oviedo, Fla.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Sheila Sauriol.
Her funeral will be held on Friday, September 14, at 9 a.m. from the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Rita Church, Oakland Beach Avenue, Warwick. Visiting hours are Thursday 4-8 p.m. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, East Greenwich.
