Job Lot matching $1 donations to Community Food Bank

During this busy holiday season of shopping and decorating, it can be easy to overlook the fact that many people are struggling to adequately feed themselves and their family. Ocean State Job Lot, with the help of its customers, is stepping up to help, with a chain-wide in-store fundraising effort that benefits food banks throughout the Northeast and, locally, the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

Through Dec. 31, the closeout retailer invites customers at each of its 115 stores chain-wide to donate one dollar at the checkout counter to help alleviate hunger in their local area. Job Lot is headquartered in North Kingstown and has 16 stores throughout the state. It also has stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, New York and New Jersey.

Now in its 12th year, this annual fundraiser is part of Job Lot’s continued strides to combat food insecurity. The company matches the first $100,000 of donations made by customers. All money raised goes to the Ocean State Job Lot Charitable Foundation’s “Three Square Meals” family meal assistance program.

Last holiday season, the company raised a record $1.4 million for “Three Square Meals” which resulted in Job Lot donating 109 tractor-trailer loads of food (a $4.2 million value) to select food banks in 2014. Each truckload contained about 40,000 pounds of food, and the 109 truckloads provided nearly one million meals to 1.2 million people. Job Lot covers all logistical expenses of the deliveries including warehousing, labor and gasoline, ensuring that every penny of every dollar raised is used to buy food.
