Joe Amato to be inducted into EG Athletic Hall of Fame

Joe Amato, an East Greenwich native and Warwick resident, will be inducted April 30 into the East Greenwich Athletic Hall of Fame.

Amato attended East Greenwich schools and graduated from high school in 1984. He was a standout wrestler for the Avengers, earning All Division honors and 2nd team All State. He was also team captain.

Participating in AAU freestyle Greco-Roman wrestling at the same time he was RI freestyle champion for three years and New England freestyle champion in 1982. He returned to EGHS as an assistant coach in 1985, helping to coach a New England champion and national qualifier. He took over as head coach in 1991 and stayed in that capacity until 2011, garnering multiple division titles and in 1997 came in second overall in the state, the best finish in school history.

At Rhode Island College he competed for four years, winning four freestyle titles and being ranked 8th in the country in singles. He also won the New England Greco-Roman singles crown in 1991. As team captain he helped the Anchormen to three New England championships. He graduated with a degree in industrial technology.

Amato is a self-employed shellfisherman who has also served as a dock manager and does carpentry work and snow removal on the side. He is also a board member of the Rhode Island Shellfishermen's Association.
