John J. Hughes, Jr.

John J. Hughes, Jr., age 94, of Warwick, passed away on June 14, 2012.

Born in Providence, he was the oldest son of the late John and Margaret (McCarthy) Hughes. John grew up with his 5 brothers and 5 sisters in Gaspee Plateau on one of the last remaining farms in that area. When not tending the farm, the family maintained a small shell fishing business on Warwick Cove. John was a World War II United States Army veteran, and was with the 95th Army Infantry and General George Patton in the European Theatre. He met his wife to be, Jessie A. MacCaffray, while training in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania before shipping overseas. During his service he was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf clusters for bravery in action. Upon his return from the Army, John worked for the United States Postal Service. He worked out of the Edgewood and Providence offices and retired after more than 35 years of dedicated service. John was a charter member of St. Peter’s Church on Fair St., Warwick.

He leaves behind his daughter Carol L. Gronostalski of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, his sons, John J. Hughes, III of Niantic, Conneticut, Michael J. Hughes of Jacksonville, Florida, Patrick D. Hughes of Saunderstown; his sisters, Ellen Goff of North Providence, Anna Needham and Rose Dwyer of Warwick, his brothers William Hughes of Riverside, Dennis Hughes of Narragansett, Thomas Hughes of Warwick; 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; as well as over 100 nephews and nieces that wish him God’s speed. He was the father of the late Kevin C. Hughes, and the brother of the late Margaret Allen, Mary Dorrwachter, Richard Hughes and Joseph Hughes.

His funeral was held on Monday, June 18, from the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Ave., Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial in Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Rd., Kingston. Burial with military honors was in the Rhode Island Veterans’ Cemetery, Exeter.
