John J. Sharkey

John J. Sharkey, 89, of Narragansett, RI and Boynton Beach, Florida passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on June 19, 2015. He was the beloved husband of Alice Sharkey for 61 years.

He was born in Providence raised in Pascoag, the son of the late Bertha (Bucklin) and John J. Sharkey, Sr. (BN CSM USA). He graduated Classical High school in 1943 and met his love and future wife, Alice F. Carnevale, while working at Shepard’s Department store. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and served two tours honorably during World War II. Trained on B-29, he was diverted to the European Theater of Operations and served with the 8th Air Force, 92nd Bomber Group, as a B-17 tail-gun and navigator positions, and in his second tour was as an aerial photo lab technician. His final assignment was with 548th Air Services Group, Roswell Field, New Mexico.

Graduating Providence College in 1952 (cum laude), he returned to his beloved Classical High School to teach English literature for over 20 years and served as a guidance counselor (1955-1982). He coached fencing and golf in the 1960’s, completed his Master Degree at Rhode Island College (1961) in Secondary Education, and continued his study of H.P. Lovecraft. He belonged to English Literature associations and was a member of the American Legion (former Post 26 – Yankee Division) and recently Legion Post 12.

He leaves his wife Alice; his son and wife, LTC-Retired Stephen and Angela Sharkey; and his grandchildren; Dr. Stephanie, Suzanne, Andrew, and Annalisa Sharkey. He is predeceased by his son John T Sharkey.

His funeral ceremony will be held Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at 10 a.m. from the Fagan-Quinn Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Rd., North Kingstown, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Veronica Chapel, 1035 Boston Neck Rd., Narragansett. Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours on June 23, 2015, 4-7 p.m.
