John R. Skuce, Jr. 78, died Saturday, July 30. Mr. Skuce is survived by his wife, Joyce Hatch.

A native of Rhode Island, he was a son of Sally J. Skuce and the late John Richard Skuce, of Rhode Island. At the age of 16, he enlisted in the Rhode Island National Guard, and at age 18, he joined the United States Marine Corps, serving for three years. For the remainder of his life, he remained a true patriot. He was commandant of the Tar Heel Detachment of the Marine Corps League in 2004, and also in 2004, he was named Marine of the Year by the N.C. Marine Corps League. He was actively involved in the Capital City Young Marines whose group does an annual camp on the family farm. He was a textile machine salesman, both nationally and internationally.

Mr. Skuce is survived by five children: John R. Skuce III and wife, Karen, of Erwin,NC, Bridget A. Skuce, Timothy H. Skuce and wife, Kerri, and Keith J. Skuce and wife, Erica, all of Rhode Island, Samuel Nelson Skuce and wife, Jeannette, of Garner, NC; as well as his sisters, Judith Gorton and Dede Phalen, both of Rhode Island, and Nancy Chase of Florida; brothers, Donald Skuce of Rhode Island, and Stephen Skuce of Massachusetts; and seven grandchildren: Courtney, Andrew, Cameron, Zachary, Hannah, Aries, and Dylan Skuce.

His funeral is Thursday, Aug. 4, 4 p.m., Tyndall Funeral Home, Mount Olive, NC. Burial following in family cemetery. Visitation one hour prior to services.
