Warwick Vets senior Shane Johnson has pitched well all season and has looked dominant at times, but he didn’t have much to show for his efforts.
Johnson turned in one of the best pitching performances the state has seen this season, striking out 16 in a complete-game one-hitter against Portsmouth. Johnson allowed just a third-inning run as the ’Canes won 3-1.
Johnson had turned in several other strong efforts this season, including overpowering performances against Cranston East and Toll Gate, but he had nothing to show for those outings in the win column.
Vets improved to 3-7 with the victory, which followed a similar script as their last victory, a 3-1 win over defending state champion Cranston West. Kevin Hickey pitched a two-hitter in that game.
Vets was scheduled to play Division I-South leader North Kingstown on Wednesday, with results unavailable at press time. On Friday, Vets begins its second go-round against divisional opponents, with seven home games to finish out the season. Vets hosts Barrington on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
