Jonny Lang to bring award-winning blues sound to Park Theatre

Since bursting onto the blues scene as a 15-year-old in 1997 with his major label debut “Lie to Me,” Jonny Lang has built a reputation as one of the best live performers and guitarists of his generation. Now featuring the release of his first new album in seven years, Lang will perform at the historic Park Theatre in Cranston on Friday, Nov. 15 as part of his North American tour.

Born and raised in North Dakota, Lang was introduced to the Motown sound at an early age when his father took him to see the Bad Medicine Blues Band. Following the show, Lang was immediately drawn to the blues and the guitar and began taking lessons from Bad Medicine guitarist Ted Larsen. By the time he turned 13, and just a few short months after first picking up a guitar, Lang was invited to join the band, which changed its name to Kid Jonny Lang & The Big Bang.

Shortly after, Lang signed with A&M Records and released the critically acclaimed multi-platinum “Lie to Me” the day before his 16th birthday. His next album, “Wander this World,” earned the young star his first Grammy nomination. In 2006, Lang won a Grammy Award for his gospel-influenced album, “Turn Around.” During his illustrious career, Lang has toured with such musical giants as Aerosmith and the Rolling Stones, while also sharing the stage with artists such as Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Jeff Beck, Bono, and Sting.

After taking a break from recording to focus on starting a family and performing live, Lang released his first new studio album in seven years with the September 2013 release of “Fight For My Soul.” Featuring textured arrangements, gorgeous vocal melodies, and expressive guitar playing, Lang considers the album an expression of his continued growth as a musician as the album defies categorization by a single genre.

“This album is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time; some of the songs may surprise people,” said Lang. “Creatively, I think there is a lot more going on inside of me than I’ve been sharing on records so far. Much of what I’ve experienced through music and life in general is in these new songs.”

Jonny Lang will perform at the historic Park Theatre at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15. Tickets are $35, $45 and $55 and available by calling the Box Office at 467-7275 or online at www.ParkTheatreRI.com. The Park Theatre is located at 848 Park Avenue, Cranston. Free parking is available for all shows.
