Judging law enforcement officials

To the Editor:

The police are our last line of defense against anarchy. They risk their lives to try to protect a populace that is so self-serving and arrogant, that it is truly a wonder that anyone would even attempt to protect them. A law enforcement officer is truly in a no-win situation. If they do their job and protect us from the miscreants that run amuck throughout our society, they are criticized. If they do not respond quickly enough or as forceful as the person being inconvenienced feels is necessary, they are criticized. They are second-guessed by individuals who have never had to deal with situations that our law enforcement officials must contend with on an hourly basis.

Many of the individuals they are forced to have interpersonal relationships with are young people. Young people who have been coddled, spoiled, protected and told they can do no wrong by parents who were similarly brought up. They are nurtured for 18 years and then released upon society, whereby we have to deal with them on a daily basis. They are arrogant, smug and condescending and mommy and daddy have always told them they are right, no matter how bizarre or inane their behavior.

So perhaps before we judge our law enforcement officials, we should walk a mile in their shoes and see what it is like to do their job. Talk is cheap my friends, but talk requires no intestinal fortitude. Walking into a dark alley presenting oneself as a target to a drug-crazed maniac does.

Integrity? Take time to look at Warwick Police Report # 12-5688-OF. This is a public document and is very interesting, it concerns a new member of the school committee.
