New Year's Day plunges at City Park, Goddard Park

Many of Rhode Island’s New Year’s Day plunges are held in Newport, Jamestown or Westerly, but you won’t need to travel that far to take a dip with some equally inclined people.

The Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership and Little Rhodie Bully Breed Club are hosting plunges close to home…as close as Warwick. The current forecast for New Year’s Day is partly cloudy with a high of 42 degrees and a low of 29 degrees, but everyone is invited to get a little chilly for good causes.

The Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership will host its sixth annual Frozen Clam Obstaplunge on New Year’s Day at 11 a.m. at Goddard Park. The event is sponsored by the likes of Ryan McGowan at Laid Back Fitness and CMIT Solutions of Central Rhode Island.

“It’s just a lot of fun whether people want to participate or support those who participate,” said RIMP president and CEO Jo-Ann Schofield.

This is the second year for the obstacle course, and any brave souls are welcome to try it. Participants can leap over hurdles and navigate obstacles before taking the chilly plunge.

The event will help RIMP continue its services and to kick off National Mentoring Month, which celebrates mentoring and raises awareness of the need for mentors. Schofield said 900 kids across the state of Rhode Island are on the waiting list for mentors through its 60 programs.

RIMP anticipates about 200 people at the plunge. Everyone who signs up for the “minute of discomfort for a year of glory” gets a Frozen Clam t-shirt and a goodie bag.

Little Rhodie Bully Breed Club, which aids Rhode Island’s shelter pit bulls, has its Pit Bull Plunge on New Year’s Day at Warwick City Park (this one is at 10 a.m., so ambitious plungers can hit both this one and the Frozen Clam). Last year, between 80 and 100 people showed up to help the club continue its business of community outreach and getting dogs certified as therapy dogs through Dynamic Dog Training Services, LLC. Sue Parker of the Club and Training Service said some people show up in costumes to plunge and play games.

This year, the plunge will also help sustain Dirty Paws Beast-Ro and Lounge, the Club’s new endeavor. Beast-Ro is a gourmet doggie lounge that lets both owned and shelter dogs come with owners or handlers for some pampering. Dogs get a meal, “dessert” and “beer” as well as some playtime. Beast-Ro is always looking for volunteers, and those interested can find more information at the plunge.

Registration and more information on the Frozen Clam is available at www.mentorri.org or www.laidbackfitness.org. Check in starts at 11 a.m. with the dip/obstacle course starting at noon. The cost is $40 for obstaplungers, $30 for traditional Frozen Clam dippers, and free for kids 10 and under.

For more information on the Pit Bull Plunge, contact Susan Parker at dynamic.dog.lady@gmail.com, visit dynamicdogtraining.webs.com or the Little Rhodie Bully Breed Facebook page.

Other Rhode Island plunges, according to a list from Motif Magazine, include the Newport Polar Bear Plunge, Freezin For a Reason: 11th Annual Penguin Plunge in Westerly, the Barrington Polar Plunge, First Day Walk and Polar Plunge in Prudence Island, the RI CAN Polar Plunge in Charlestown Beach, the Jamestown 1st Day Plunge, Sandy Beach Polar Plunge to Benefit Forever Paws and the Block Island Polar Plunge.

You can't get your dogs certified through a business who isn't even licensed. Save your time ad money and go elsewhere.
