June visit of traveling Vietnam Wall planned by Wallin, Russell

Operation Stand Down Rhode Island, based in Johnston, and McBride’s Pub in Providence plan to bring a traveling replica of the Vietnam Wall in June. The American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) Traveling Wall is an 80 percent scale version of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. Spanning 360 feet with its impressive eight-foot tall apex, the wall contains every single name etched on the original.

The wall will be displayed for public viewing at India Point Park in Providence between Thursday, June 5 and Sunday, June 8.

“A number of events will be planned to coincide with the display of the wall to honor, respect and remember men and women who served, and to pay special tribute to those who gave all,” said Erik B. Wallin, executive director of Operation Stand Down Rhode Island.

Wallin also noted that there would be an emphasis on making the event a resource for veterans who are seeking assistance because the best way to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice is to help their brothers and sisters in need.

Warwick resident Mark Russell, owner of McBride’s Pub in Providence, proposed the idea to Operation Stand Down Rhode Island as a way to honor veterans and raise money for Rhode Island veterans in need.

“Since I opened McBride’s Pub in 2011, we regularly hold a ‘last call’ at closing as a way to remember Rhode Island’s fallen veterans,” he said. “I felt this was a great way to provide an opportunity for veterans in Rhode Island and surrounding states to experience the majesty and solemnity of the Vietnam Memorial without having to travel to Washington, D.C., and at the same time help our local veterans who are really struggling,” said Russell.

According to Wallin, the event is in the early planning stages, however the city of Providence, through the mayor’s office, has agreed to assist.

“We will be asking Rhode Island businesses, veterans groups and individuals to contribute to the event to cover the costs, which will be around $15,000, and that additional funds raised will go to support the work of Operation Stand Down Rhode Island in its fight against veteran homelessness in Rhode Island,” said Wallin.

Those interested in contributing to the Wall may contact Operation Stand Down Rhode Island at 383-4730 or visit the website at www.osdri.org.
