Motorists may question how excavation near the intersection of Post and Airport Roads might actually improve the flow until they consider that beneath the surface is a major water line serving businesses on both roads. Under a $179,000 contract with Boyle & Fogarty Construction of Smithfield, a defective shutoff valve that has been locked in the open position for decades will be replaced. The replacement valve will enable the Water Division to isolate breaks in the system without disrupting service to customers. “Hopefully, the weather holds up and we won’t have any problems,” division director Daniel O’Rourke said yesterday. The job is projected for completion this week, at which time traffic flow will be fully restored.
