The Pilgrim Senior Center received a new automated external defibrillator (AED) thanks to Lifespan Community Health Services that is making 48 of the units available at no cost at areas frequented by large numbers of people in cities and towns across the state. City nurse Pat Seltzer was delighted to get the unit, which will replace one that is now nine years old and showing signs of fatigue. She said she fears it might malfunction when needed. While the units are “very easy to use,” says Lifespan’s Cardiac Project Coordinator Marianne Stephanian and “talks you through the whole procedure,” their use is recommended for those who know CPR. The center unit, which is wired into an alarm and notification to rescue, has never been used. The unit shocks the heart to stop cardiac arrhythmias that can be fatal. Here, Seltzer and Stephanian show the unit to Mayor Scott Avedisian, who visited the center Friday.
