To the Editor:
As weekly reader of the Beacon, I’m stupefied by the recent editorial titled ‘A sanctuary for whom?’ In it the writer lays out in chapter and verse everything that Governor Chaffee has done to destroy any distinctions in our State laws and policies between citizens/legal immigrants and illegal immigrants – his rescission of E-Verify, the granting of in-state tuition to illegal immigrants (which is emblematic of what liberals have been doing in this country for the last forty years and that is to achieve through the courts and the bureaucracies that which they can’t achieve through the legislative process), and his consideration of issuing special drivers licenses and permits to illegal aliens.
The editorial ends by asking if these changes will result in Rhode Island “taking a hit at the expense of undocumented citizens whose mere presence is a crime?” Or will the result be a “better place by awarding liberty, freedom, education and employment to all?” Amazingly, the writer concludes that “For now, we don’t know, but our money is on Chafee.”
If I were a legal resident who went through the legal process of coming to America, I’d just have to wonder what I did wrong. Once upon a time, immigrants came to this country to become Americans, now it appears that too many come here just to be in America.
