Karen Schoch honored by SkillWorks for workforce training

Posted

Karen Schoch of Warwick recently received a SkillWorks Award for being a true champion and national leader in workforce training.

Schoch, manager for workforce development at Boston Children’s Hospital, helped to build out a robust Bridges to College program that includes academic preparation, coaching, advocacy and financial support. She also advocated for a shift in the hospital’s tuition benefit policy to allow college-bound hospital employees participating in the SkillWorks training program to get their tuition paid in advance, rather than reimbursed, making it more financially accessible for many. To date, over 500 employees have participated in the SkillWorks training partnership.

The nationally renown SkillWorks has been working to improve workforce development in Boston and in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts since 2003 by bringing together philanthropy, government, community organizations, unions and employers to address the twin goals of helping low-income individuals attain family-supporting jobs and businesses find skilled workers.

Also honored at the 10th Anniversary Celebration was State Senator Kenneth J. Donnelly, for his role as a key partner in SkillWorks’ legislative efforts. The keynote speaker for the evening was Dr. Pam Eddinger, president of Bunker Hill Community College.
